STEVE MARTIN

“So in 1979, Peter had this band called Ivers Divers. It was the band that could play Nirvana Cuba. It seems that it was getting more clear that Peter wasn’t going to fit into this sort of new wave folk pop bullshit that was really taking over. It didn’t seem like he was working that hard to fit into a square, traditional role in the entertainment world, other than being Peter Ivers, the musician-genius.”

ROCHELLE ROBERTSON (colleague, friend)

“Nirvana Cuba was really interesting. The most remarkable song or songs that I remember were about love in the Middle East. I don’t know how to explain any of his shows. It was performance art, we played different characters. We had choreography.”

MARK STUMPF

“His was not a mainstream muse.”

LUCY FISHER

“He wasn’t self-destructive; he just didn’t want to make it easy on himself. He wanted to do each thing in a way that he had never done before. And it wasn’t just him being defiant, when he sat down to do it, it would be different from the way everyone else did it. He wanted to prove that he could do it his way, but it also had to be the most complicated hard way.”

DOUG MARTIN

“The thread that held all of Peter’s projects together was Peter. Some had a more stripped-down sound, some had a more linear quality to the performance where it was more consistent. When Peter Ivers was with a group of professional musicians, the result was always something where you were left with, I can’t classify what I just heard, but it sounded great. It had references to the best of what he liked, and then some things not normally referenced he would tie in and sew up with harmonica. It was difficult to compare when really the only thread was often Peter.”
